Unified Vietnam, Butterflies, June 30th, 1987, Michel Nr. 1802-1808; Seven stamps with nominals of 1D (two stamps) 2D, 3D (two stamps) nd 5D (two stamps) were issued in perforation 12.5 and imperforate.

Stamps sold at Vietnamese post office were without gum while stamps sold by the official Vietnamese stamp agency were gummed.

Registered air mail letter sent in April of 1987 as a mixed currency franking from Ho Chi Minh City to Klewitz. The letter carries half of the perforated Butterflies set plus stamps from the Flat Fish, Traditional Houses (Imperforate), Reconstruction and Year of the Cat sets.  Imperforate stamps on postally used cover are very rare. The Flat Fish stamps were still denominated in old Dong while all other stamps were already denominated in new Dong.  The Vietnamese Government conducted a devaluation of the Dong on September 14th, 1985. This meant that all stamps issued prior to this date were only worth one tenth at the time of mailing. The overall postage hence amounted to  2.4 oD =0.24 nD. plus the stamps in new Dong (51 nD) plus the red free frank for 297 nD for 348.24 nD.

The Prehistoric Animals, Intercosmos and HCM Birthday stamps were still denominated in old Dong while all other stamps were already denominated in new Dong.  The Vietnamese Government conducted a devaluation of the Dong on September 14th, 1985. This meant that all stamps issued prior to this date were only worth one tenth at the time of mailing. The overall postage hence amounted to  23 oD =2.3 nD. plus the stamps in new Dong (59 nD) plus the red free frank for 1043 nD for 1,104.3 nD.

The letter carries half of the imperforate Butterflies set plus imperforate stamps from the Water and Mountain Spirit set for an overall postage of 32D.  Imperforate stamps on postally used cover are very rare.

There are also five military free franks. The ones without a nominal were not valid for international postage but were nevertheless accepted by the postal clerk. The letter carries a block of four of the 5D Postal Union stamps plus stamps on which the the top right stamp shows the plate error “small passer mark at top right of the stamp”. There are also stamps from the Butterflies (imperforate) Cacti, Italia Stamp Exhibition and Animals and Plant sets. Error stamps and imperforate stamps on postally used cover are very rare. The Animals and Plant stamps were still denominated in old Dong while all other stamps were already denominated in new Dong.  The Vietnamese Government conducted a devaluation of the Dong on September 14th, 1985. This meant that all stamps issued prior to this date were only worth one tenth at the time of mailing.
