Here is the mint set

The 4 Dong value was reprinted (probably in 1987) in a grey vs. the grey-black color tone. It also differs in the paper as it is printed on thin paper. Here are blocks of four of the first and second printing.

These stamps were not officially released imperforate however a small number of imperforate trial proofs have come to market. Here are imperforated proofs of the entire set from the top left sheet margin.

Here are the three print phases of the 4 Dong value. Note that the finished stamp carries a plate error of “black dot to the left of th circle”.

Registered air mail letter sent in December of 1983 from Nguyen Trai to Klewitz. The letter carries the entire set plus other contemporary NVN stamps for an overall, postage of 57.68D. Green Fulda custom cachet in front.

Mixed franking of stamps from the Ciconiiformes, Mushrooms, Cooperation with the USSR, Communist Party and Defense and production sets paying an overall postage of 94.50D on a registered international air mail letter sent in January of 1984 from HCM City to Klewitz in Germany. Registered air mail letter sent in October of 1988 from Ho Chi Minh City to Klewitz. The red cancel shows the erroneous date of October 15th, 1983 while the red free frank in front shows the correct date of December 15th, 1988. The letter carries both printings of the 4D value and a number of the imperforate Fish set values from 1988. Imperforate stamps on postally used cover are very rare. The overall postage of the letter amounted to 5,232.70D.

Mixed franking of the Union Congress set (of which the 5D value shows a significant passer-shift of the blue color towards the left) together with stamps from the Dove, World Food Day, Birds and Raptor sets paying an overall postage of 20.10D (Including the red free frank for 5.60D/Pitney Bowes-GB “6300”) on a registered air mail letter sent from HCM City to Klewitz innGermany in August of 1982. Fragment of the green Fulda custom cachet on front. Errors stamps on postal used letters are very rare.

Registered air mail letter sent in October of 1988 from Ho Chi Minh City to Klewitz. The letter carries the second printing of the 4D value in grey and four imperfroate values of the 1987 Mushroom set. Imperforate stamps on postally used cover are very rare. The overall postage of the letter amounted to 5,184 Dong (including the red free frank for 3,870D).

Registered air mail letter sent in March of 1985 from HO Chi Minh City to Klewitz. Th letter carries six of the reprinted 50xu Peace Meeting stamp in darker colors. The pair on the right shows a significant passer-shift of the turquoise color downwards. There are also some Hymenoptera and Cooperation with the Soviet Union stamps for an overall postage of 35 Dong. Registered air mail letter sent in May of 1987 as a mixed currency franking from Ho Chi Minh City to Klewitz. The letter carries perforated stamps from the Insect, Bronze Vessels, Reconstruction, Union Congress and Friendship with USSSR sets. Apart from the USSR stamps all other stamps were already denominated in new Dong.  The Vietnamese Government conducted a devaluation of the Dong on September 14th, 1985. This meant that all stamps issued prior to this date were only worth one tenth at the time of mailing. The overall postage hence amounted to  1.70 oD =0.17nD. plus the stamps in new Dong (118nD) plus the red free frank for 255 nD for 373.17 nD. Fragment of the green Fulda custom cachet on front.

Registered air mail letter sent in June of 1987 as a mixed currency franking from Ho Chi Minh City to Klewitz. The letter carries the perforated National Assembly stamp set plus stamps from the Contract with the USSR, Defense and production, Rabrindanath and  Worker Militia sets. The Worker Militia, Rabrindanath, USSR and production and Defense stamps were still denominated in old Dong while all other stamps were already denominated in new Dong.  The Vietnamese Government conducted a devaluation of the Dong on September 14th, 1985. This meant that all stamps issued prior to this date were only worth one tenth at the time of mailing. The overall postage hence amounted to 22.20 oD =2.22 nD. plus the stamps in new Dong (160 nD) plus the red free frank for 223 nD for 385.22nD.

Registered air mail letter sent in March of 19889 as a mixed currency franking from Ho Chi Minh City to Klewitz. The letter carries the perforated  stamps from the Locomotives set plus stamps from the Child Immunization, Cooperation with USSSR, Interior Ministry Troops, Ton Du’c Thang, Hydro Stations and USSR Peace Treaty sets. There is also the military free frank issued in 1986. The Cooperation with USSR stamps are present in both color variations. The Cooperation with USSR and Interior Ministry Troop stamps were still denominated in old Dong while all other stamps were already denominated in new Dong.  The Vietnamese Government conducted a devaluation of the Dong on September 14th, 1985. This meant that all stamps issued prior to this date were only worth one tenth at the time of mailing. The overall postage hence amounted to 36 oD = 3.6 nD. plus the stamps in new Dong (2,641 nD) plus the red free frank for 3,960 nD for 6,604.6nD. Fragment of the green Fulda custom cachet on front.
