North Vietnam, Butterflies, January 6th, 1976, Michel Nr. 833-840; Eight stamps in the nominals of 12 xu (two stamps), 20 xu, 30 xu, 40 xu, 50 xu, 60 xu and 1 Dong were issued in perforation 11.0 and im-perforated.

Here is the min im-perforated set in blocks of four:

Rare single franking of the 1D stamp on a letter sent in March of 1978 by a member of the Vietnamese Armed Forces (note the Hom Thu number in the sender line) to Czechoslovakia. On December 1st, 1976 postage rates were changed to 1D for standard international letters.

Philatelic letter featuring the entire butterfly set sent from Ho Chi Minh City in June of 1980 to Luxembourg paying an overall postage of 3.24D.

Very rare express mail letter sent to Klewitz in May of 1976. It carries half of the im-perforated butterfly set plus perforated the medical plant set on the reverse. Imperforate stamps on postally used cover are very rare. The overall postage amounted to 2.10 Dong which appears to be in excess of the required tariff (1.50 Dong) for a standard 20 gram express mail letter to West Germany. Fulda arrival cancel on the reverse.

Very rare express mail letter sent to Klewitz in May of 1976. It carries the other half of the im-perforated butterfly set plus the perforated woman movement stamp set on the reverse. Imperforate stamps on postally used cover are very rare. The overall postage amounted to 2.46 Dong which appears to be in excess of the required tariff (1.50 Dong) for a standard 20 gram express mail letter to West Germany. Fulda arrival cancel on the reverse.

Mixed franking of the 30xu Butterfly stamp together with three 50xu Domestic Bird stamps paying an overall postage of 1.80D on a letter (full content preserved) sent from Ho Chi Minh City to France in September of 1979.

Mixed franking of the 20xu Butterfly stamp together with a 12xu National Assembly stamp paying an overall postage of 32xu on a registered letter. The letter was sent in April of 1976 from Hanoi to a member of the Vietnamese Armed Forces (Note the Hom Th number in the address line). The standard domestic postage amounted 12xu and the registration fee to 24xu so this letter was actually under-franked by 4xu.

Very rare large registered letter sent in February of 1978 from Hanoi to Essen, West Germany. The letter carries the souvenir sheet, the im-perforated single stamp from the souvenir sheet plus the 1D Butterfly stamp for an overall postage of 7.30D. Souvenir sheets or stamps from souvenir sheets on postally used cover are very rare.

Very rare registered express mail letter sent from Hai Phong to Klewitz in June of 1979. Rare express mail letter sent from Bac Lieu to Klewitz in March of 1979. It carries a number of the flower stamps but also four of the National Liberation Front (NFL) stamps and many butterfly stamps. Two of the stamps (First Meeting of the Unified National Assembly) were already issued based on the North Vietnamese currency which made them eligible for postage in the North, however, the 30 Dong flag stamp and the 30 Dong Ho Chi Minh stamp which were still in the old South Vietnamese currency were devalued 50:1 at the time of mailing so were worth only 1.2 Dong resulting in an overall postage of 6.17 Dong. Fulda custom cachet on front.

Rare registered express mail letter sent to Klewitz in July of 1978. It carries a block of four of the Children stamps plus some of the butterfly stamps. The letter was sent from Bac Ninh but interestingly enough the R-Label was only attached in Bac-Giang. The letter was opened un-professionally during transit (as pointed out by Klewitz) which may have been a censorship move but no censor marking were indicated. The overall postage amounted to 5.08 Dong. Fulda arrival cancel on the reverse. Green Fulda custom cachet on front.

Another, very rare registered letter featuring the souvenir-sheet on woven paper and lighter frame colors along with a number of other NVN stamps (including two of the 1D Butterfly stamp) for an overall postage of 6.82D. The letter was sent from Hanoi to Essen in West Germany in February of 1978.

The Butterflies stamps were still denominated in old Dong while all other stamps were already denominated in new Dong.  The Vietnamese Government conducted a devaluation of the Dong on September 14th, 1985. This meant that all stamps issued prior to this date were only worth one tenth at the time of mailing. The overall postage hence amounted to 3 oD = 0.30 nD. plus the stamps in new Dong (3,700 nD) plus the red free frank for 6,710 nD for10,410.3nD. Fragment of the green Fulda custom cachet on front.
