Unified Vietnam, Water Flowers, January 15th, 1980, Michel Nr. 1077-1084; Eight stamps with no finals of 12 xu (two stamps), 20 xu, 30 xu, 40 xu, 50 xu, 60 xu and 1 Dong were issued perforated 12.25 and im-perforated.
Rare registered letter sent from Nguyen Trai to Klewitz in June of 1982. The letter carries three of the 1 Dong Day of the Child stamps. They show a double perforation comb strike in-between stamps and on the selvage. Error stamps on postally used cover are very rare. There are also two of the Water Flower stamps. Rare registered express mail letter sent to Klewitz in July of 1981. It carries a block of nine of the green/yellow 12 xu stamp (Five Year Plan) that is grossly mis-perforated. Error stamps on postally used cover are very rare. There is also a 3 Dong National Liberation Front stamp from 1970. The currency used by the NLF in the South was not compatible with the currency of the North. As a result these stamps were not valid postage there. Nevertheless it appears that the postal clerk was not aware of this fact and hence he/she accepted the 3 Dong stamp in full. There are also some of the Water Flower stamps. Registered letter sent from Quan 5 (Cholon) to Klewitz in February of 1982. It carries the entire set with pairs of both colors of the 12 xu Coat of Arms stamp. 12 xu Water Flower stamp on the reverse. The overall postage amounted to 7.90 Dong. Green Fulda custom cachet on front.

HCM Birthday set in different color tones plus two of the 12 xu Communist Party stamps for an overall postage of 10.90 Dong (including the red free frank for 5 Dong) . Very rare registered express mail letter featuring the souvenir sheet (1st Printing) and one of the Water Flower stamps for an overall postage of 13.92 Dong (Including the red free frank of 6 Dong that was used to cancel the souvenir sheet). Military Free Franks without any nominal value were not valid for international postage according to UPU rules so they were only intended for domestic usage. Here is a very rare international express mail letter sent to Klewitz from Quan 5 in April of 1981. The letter features both perforation versions (11.0 & 12.5) of the blue military stamp and the red military stamp with the plate error “tank in action” along with other military stamps from the period. It appears that the stamps were accepted by the postal clerk without any issue and that they credited with a 12 xu nominal. The overall postage amounted to 14.76D (including the two red free franks). Registered air mail letter sent on March 27th, 1989 as a mixed currency franking from Ho Chi Minh City to Klewitz. The letter carries half of the perforated Helikopters set plus stamps from the Hydro Stations and Water Flower sets. The Water Flower stamps were still denominated in old Dong while all other stamps were already denominated in new Dong. The Vietnamese Government conducted a devaluation of the Dong on September 14th, 1985. This meant that all stamps issued prior to this date were only worth one tenth at the time of mailing. The overall postage hence amounted to 2.60 oD = 0.26 nD. plus the stamps in new Dong (2,130 nD) plus the red free frank for 6,880 nD for 9,010.26nD.

The Flower and Water Flower stamps were still denominated in old Dong while all other stamps were already denominated in new Dong. The Vietnamese Government conducted a devaluation of the Dong on September 14th, 1985. This meant that all stamps issued prior to this date were only worth one tenth at the time of mailing. The overall postage hence amounted to 4 oD = 0.40 nD. plus the stamps in new Dong (110 nD) plus the red free frank for 8,910 nD for 9,020.4nD.

The letter carries the souvenir-sheet from the August Revolution set plus stamps from the Production and Defense, Water Flowers, Roses, HCM Birthday, Labor Day, Asia Games and Butterflies sets. All stamps, except the Reconstruction and Labor Day stamps were denominated in new Dong while the other stamps were still denominated in old Dong. The Vietnamese Government conducted a devaluation of the Dong on September 14th, 1985. This meant that all stamps issued prior to this date were only worth one tenth at the time of mailing.
