Unified Vietnam, Off-Shore Oil Production, April 28th, 1988, Michel Nr. 1921; A single stamp with a 1,000D nominal was issued in perforation 13. The high nominal was urgently needed due to very high inflationary pressure (374.4% in 1988) which made especially the franking of international letters easier.

This stamp was not officially released imperforate however a number of imperforate trial proofs have come to market. Here’s a mint block of four of them.

Registered air mail letter sent in June of 1988 from Ho Chi Minh City to Klewitz. The letter carries one of the Off-shore Oil Production stamps plus stamps from the Roses (imperforate), Postal Union and Fish sets for an overall postage of  1,509D (including the red free frank for 269D). Registered air mail letter sent in July of 1988 from Ho Chi Minh City to Klewitz. The letter carries perforated and imperforate Off-shore Oil Production stamps plus stamps from the Red Cross, Party Decisions, HAFNIA Airplanes and Cacti sets for an overall postage of  2,426D (including the red free frank for 201D). Registered express air mail letter sent in June of 1988 as a mixed currency franking from Ho Chi Minh City to Klewitz. The letter carries perforated and imperforate Off-shore Oil Production stamps plus stamps from the Prehistoric Animal (imperforate) set.  Imperforate stamps on postally used cover are very rare.  Fragment of the green Folds custom cachet on front. The Prehistoric Animal stamps were still denominated in old Dong while all other stamps were already denominated in new Dong.  The Vietnamese Government conducted a devaluation of the Dong on September 14th, 1985. This meant that all stamps issued prior to this date were only worth one tenth at the time of mailing. The overall postage hence amounted to  10 oD = 1 nD. plus the stamps in new Dong (3,000 nD)  for 3,001 nD. Fragment of the green Fulda custom cachet on front.

Air mail letter sent in October of 1988 from Troung Sa to Klewitz. Truong Sa is the Vietnamese name for Spratly Island. The letter carries an imperforate  set of the  Paracel and Spratly Island stamp plus stamps from the Bach Dang and Off-shore Oil Production sets for an overall postage of D 3,670. Imperforate trial proofs on postally used cover are basically unheard off.

The letter carries a block of four of the Child Inoculation stamps plus stamps from the Protected Animals, Off-shore Oil Production (imperforate), Poultry and Elephants sets.  Imperforate stamps on postally used cover are very rare.  The Protected Animal stamps were still denominated in old Dong while all other stamps were already denominated in new Dong.  The Vietnamese Government conducted a devaluation of the Dong on September 14th, 1985. This meant that all stamps issued prior to this date were only worth one tenth at the time of mailing. The overall postage hence amounted to  3.5 oD = 0.35 nD. plus the stamps in new Dong (1,256 nD)  and the red free frank for 1,170D for 2,426.35 nD. Imperforate stamps on postally used cover are very rare.

International letter sent from Hanoi to Italy in February of 1989. The letter features four of the Off-Shore OilProduction stamp plus two of the Spratly Island stamps paying an overall tariff of 4,200D.

Registered air mail letter sent in March of 1989 as a mixed currency franking from Ho Chi Minh City to Klewitz. The letter carries perforated Bicycle stamps plus stamps from the Off-shore Oil Production (imperforate), Hydro Stations, Water Lilies (imperforate), Tourism and USSR Cooperation sets. Imperforate stamps on postally used cover are very rare. The USSR Cooperation stamp  was still denominated in old Dong while all other stamps were already denominated in new Dong.  The Vietnamese Government conducted a devaluation of the Dong on September 14th, 1985. This meant that all stamps issued prior to this date were only worth one tenth at the time of mailing. The overall postage hence amounted to 4 oD = 0.4 nD. plus the stamps in new Dong (3,245 nD) plus the red free frank for 4,190 nD for 7,435.4 nD. Green Fulda custom cachet on front.
