South Vietnam, Year of the Buffalo, December 20th, 1973, Michel Nr. SVN 538-539; Two stamps in nominals 5D and 10D were issued in perforation 12.5:12.

These stamps were not officially released imperforate, however, a small number of imperforate trial proofs has come to market. Here is the imperforate set.

Single franking of the 5D value on a small domestic letter sent to Saigon in January of 1974.

Rare multiple franking of the 5D Year of the Buffalo stamp (2) paying an overall postage of 10D on a domestic letter sent within Gia Dinh in July of 1974. The letter was judged short in postage and hence a black “T” hand stamp was added to the envelope along with a “30” manuscript. Three 10P postage due stamps were added on the reverse paying an overall penalty of 30P.

Multiple franking of the 5D Buffalo stamp (3) paying an overall postage of 15D on a letter sent in September of 1984 by a member of the military (KBC 3333/Marines 1st Battalion “Wild Birds”) to a civilian in Long An. Since the standard military tariff amounted to only 10D this letter must have been of the second weight level. Cancelled with the “mute” Quan Buu machine military cancel. Red circular KBC cachet on front.

Single franking of the 10D stamp on a domestic letter (full contents preserved) sent from Dalat to Saigon in May of 1974. That was insufficient postage at the time as the civilian tarif amounted to 20D and hence a black “T” hand stamp was applied indicating that additional postage was due upon delivery. There is no indication that this was ever collected.

Single franking of the 10D stamp paying the discounted 10D military rate in force at the time. Sent in July of 1974 from KBC 3508/38th Ranger Battalion in Saigon to a civilian in the same city. Cancelled with the “mute” Quan Buu military machine cancel. Re circular KBC cachet on front.

Mixed franking of the 5D and 10D (2) Year of the Buffalo stamps paying an overall postage of 25D on a domestic letter sent from Da Lat to Gia Dinh in February of 1974.

Single franking of the 10D Year of the Buffalo stamp paying the 50% discounted military rate on a domestic letter sent by a member of the military (KBC 4555, a yet unknown KBC designation in the SICP Listing) to Saigon.

Single franking of the 10D Year of the Buffalo value on a domestic letter (full contents preserved) sent from Rach Gia to Saigon in April of 1974. The letter was under-franked and hence received a black “T” hand stamp on front indicating that additional postage was due.

Rare multiple Franklin got the 10D value paying an overall postage off 20D on a domestic printed matter mailing (medical price list) sent from Saigon to Cholon.

Mixed franking of the 50D Fisheries stamps (3) together with stamps from the Year of the Buffalo and Calligraphy sets paying an overall postage of 180D on an international air mail letter sent from Saigon to the United States in February of 1974.
