North Vietnam, 150. Birthday of Friedrich Engels, November 28th, 1970, Michel Nr. 639-640; Two stamps one with a 12 xu and one with a 1 Dong nominal were issued in perforation 11.0.

Mint set in blocks of four:

Rare single franking of 12xu value used on a local letter from Thai Binh (small post office) to a member of the North Vietnamese Military (note the Hom Th Nr. in the address line). Most local letters were destroyed during the multi-decadal war,  the tropical climate or recycling due to raw material shortages.

International letter sent in July of 1979 from Cam Ranh (small post office) to Columbus in the United States. The letter carries a mixed franking of three of the Prehistoric Animal stamps plus stamps from the Flowers and Engels sets for an overall postage of 1.66D. Bing Dinh Province transit cancel on the reverse. Full contents preserved.

International letter sent in August of 1979 to Columbus, United States and featuring the 20 xu Bird stamp plus two of the 1D Engels stamps paying an overall postage of 2.50D (full contents preserved).

Very rare express mail letter featuring two of the 12 xu and one of the 1 Dong stamps on a letter to Klewitz in August, 1974. The letter also carries a single 50 xu im-perforated stamp of the banana set from the same year. Im-perforated stamps on postally used cover are very rare. The overall postage amounted to 1.98 Dong which may have been in excess of the required tariff of 1.00 Dong for a standard express mail letter to West Germany.

Mixed franking of the high 1 Dong value of the Engels set plus the 60xu Einstein stamp for an overall postage of 1.60D on a letter (full contents preserved) to the United States.

Very rare registered express mail letter featuring one of the 12 xu stamps plus the entire im-perforated poisonous snake set sent to Klewitz in February 1971. Im-perforated stamps on postally used cover are very rare. The overall postage of the letter amounted to 1.94 which was above the required postage for a standard 20 gram registered express mail letter to West Germany (Tariff of 1.60 Dong).

Registered letter sent from Quan 5 (Cholon) to Klewitz in June of 1981. The letter carries half of the perforated Fish set plus some one of the Engels stamps for an overall postage of 8.04 Dong (including the red free rural for 5 Dong). The letter also carries a military free frank issued in 1970 that was not valid for international postage but it appears that the postal clerk accepted it for its domestic value of 12 xu.

Mixed franking of the 50xu Engels stamp with other NVN stamps (Including the 1D Engels stamp) for an overall postage 1.78D on a registered air-mail letter to Paris, France in 1973. The 1D value is hard to find on postally used cover.
