Unified Vietnam, Flowering Cacti, December 30th, 1987, Michel Nr. 1868-1875, Block 58; Seven stamps with nominals of 5D, 10D, 15D, 20D, 25D, 30D and 40D and one souvenir-sheet with a 50D nominal were issued in perforation 12.5. The stamp set (but not the souvenir-sheet) were also issued imperforate. Klewitz reports that the actual issuance date was July 10th, 1987 (which is supported by First Day Covers) so the Michel date may not be correct.

The stamps sold in Vietnamese post offices had no gum while stamps sold by the official Vietnamese postal agency were gummed.

The letter carries half of the perforated Cacti stamp set plus stamps from the Bird (imperforate), Water and Mountain Spirit, Humane Living plus the military free frank issued in 1987. Imperforate stamps on postally used cover are very rare. Since the military free frank had a 5D nominal it was valid for international postage. Registered air mail letter sent in May of 1988 as a mixed currency franking from Ho Chi Minh City to Klewitz. The letter carries the perforated and imperforate National Assembly stamp set plus stamps from the Friendship, Cactus, Traditional Minorities and Red Cross sets. Imperforate stamps on postally used cover are very rare. The Friendship stamps were still denominated in old Dong while all other stamps were already denominated in new Dong.  The Vietnamese Government conducted a devaluation of the Dong on September 14th, 1985. This meant that all stamps issued prior to this date were only worth one tenth at the time of mailing. The letter carries a pair of the October Revolution souvenir-sheets plus stamps from the October Revolution, Cacti, Insects (souvenir-sheet) and  Animals and Plant sets.  The top October Revolution souvenir-sheet shows the plate error of “dot under O of MUOI”.  The bottom October Revolution souvenir-sheet shows the dark green printing run. Error stamps and souvenir-sheets on postally used cover are very rare. The Animal and Plant  stamps were still denominated in old Dong while all other stamps were already denominated in new Dong.  The Vietnamese Government conducted a devaluation of the Dong on September 14th, 1985. This meant that all stamps issued prior to this date were only worth one tenth at the time of mailing.
